Sailing Hamble & Solent...at a glance

In Hamble you can enjoy a nice leisurely yacht charter holiday, or you can get swept away in the premier racing scene.

In 1870, Hamble held its first regatta, and to this day it remains a beloved annual tradition of the village.

Whichever way you choose to spend your solent sailing experience, be sure to enjoy the wide array of activities available, as well as the eclectic assortment of pubs, and restaurants.

While on your Solent yacht charter you can visit a piece of maritime’s most important history and go see the warship vessels at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, or the Submarine Museum

Or visit Blackgang Chine, the world’s oldest theme park, for a little excitement.

If nature is more your thing, take note of the diverse ecosystem that the Solent is home to. You may find starfish, seahorses, cuttlefish and crabs on your charter, and even seals and sharks once you get a little further out.

Or visit the Needles rocks and Lighthouse in the Isle of Wight for a fantastic day trip with a chairlift and a museum for great views and a little learning.

Climate & Best time to visit Hamble, Solent in UK

When visiting for a Hamble Yacht Charter, it is best to come in the summertime.

This is when the United Kingdom has it’s best weather.
You will find average temperatures at around 22°C, or 72°F.

There will also be much more sunshine than usual - perfect for enjoying the fresh sea air out on the deck. Winds during your Solent yacht charter are usually delightful. You will enjoy a varied range, from speeds of around 3 knots to 40 knots.

If you are a hardy type, you could consider winter sailing between the months of November and March, where temperatures are around 5°C or 41°F. Expect light winds typical of the South Coast.

Where to start your Solent yacht charter & how to get there

To begin your Solent Boat Charter, it is best to fly into the Southampton Airport (SOU) which is the nearest airport.

During the season, you will find regular flights from many European cities.

However, if you need to fly into a bigger airport, we recommend looking for flights into London Heathrow (LHR) or London Gatwick (LGW) and from there you can then take a train to Hamble via Paddington, Reading, and Southampton Central.

If you are getting into Hamble station, remember to book a taxi in advance.

Boating Holiday Tips for a Hamble & Solent Charter

For your Solent Boat Charter you will find plenty of local water holes and quaint eateries, however for provisioning prior to your departure, we recommend Tescos Supermarket on Hamble Lane in Southampton.

Here you can find everything you might need on your holiday!

It is about a 10 minute drive from the marina.

For any last minute items, there is also a Co-op supermarket in the village, about a 3 minutes’ walk away.

For anchorages during your Hamble Yacht Charter, there are an abundance of options. Yacht4Less recommends

  • East Head, Chichester Harbour: Moor by anchor or mooring ball at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), where you’ll see some fabulous bird species flying about.
  • Beaulieu River: A peaceful, calm haven, perfect for relaxing for the evening. As one of the world’s only privately-owned rivers, be sure to book your mooring in advance!
  • Whitecliff Bay, Isle of Wight: Drop your anchor in this beautiful protected bay for the evening, then the next day you can enjoy swimming in the clear blue waters and soaking up the sun on the sandy beach.
