Originally put to the vote in 2016, Brexit has been drawn out longer than expected. However, with an extension of Article 50 granted until October 31st, you can rest easy booking your Summer 2019 holiday! This means any summer bookings are well out of harm’s way, even in a no-deal scenario.
To ease any pre-holiday jitters, here is Yacht4Less’ best Brexit Advice:
For most, travel requirements have been a cause of concern, but have no fear - you will not need a visa to travel between the UK and the EU. The EU Parliament voted this April in Brussels and approved legislation that ensured UK citizens can travel without a visa to Europe for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This visa exemption ruling will remain, with or without a Brexit deal.
If you haven’t already, check your passport before traveling to ensure your holidays go off without a hitch. If you need to renew your passport, it shouldn’t be a problem. You can even renew your passport online!
The visa exemption follows confirmation that air traffic regulations for flying over the EU and UK will remain unchanged. Most modes of international transit, including airplanes, trains, and ferries, should have uninterrupted travel. The Department of Transport and Civil Aviation Authority outline all the details surrounding flying in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
For yacht charters, there are often unique requirements that might not come into play during land-based holidays. However, there is nothing to worry about here, as sailing qualifications will remain the same. The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) transcends the EU, as it is issued by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution 40.
Evidence of Competence for recreational boating is part of domestic/national jurisdiction, however, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) believes there is no reason to suspect the ICC qualification is at risk due to Brexit.
For insurance after Brexit, or in the case of no deal, UK citizens will not be eligible for free medical care with EHICs (European Health Insurance Cards). Therefore it is important to have suitable insurance policies in place to make sure your holiday can be enjoyed safely! Yacht4Less is happy to advise on private insurance options; we recommend EIS (European Insurance Services), who specialise in sailing holiday insurance packages.
In regard to driving licenses, after Brexit, UK citizens will not be able to use their UK license alone. Unless an agreement is specified in the Brexit Deal, UK citizens will need to get an International Driving Permit. You can apply for just £5.50, via your local post office. The UK Government outlines all the details of driving abroad, here.
If you would like to drive your own car in EU territory, you would need a Green Card from your insurance to ensure validity in the EU. Check with your insurance provider to understand any requirements and fees.
Lastly, one of the biggest questions on customers minds is cost. We can assure you, that prices have not and will not change for this season.
When you book with Yacht4Less, the exchange rate at the time of booking is locked in and will not change for the second installment of your payment. So while the pound has had its fluctuations over the last couple of months, you can rest assured that your existing charter bookings are not affected.
