Greece has two sailing seas. In the Ionian Sea, to the west, a north-westerly wind called the maistro usually blows Force 3-5 in the afternoon, and mornings are often calm. That makes the Ionian a good place for families and first-time crews. In the Aegean Sea, to the east, the Meltemi blows from the north and is strongest in July and August, above all in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The Saronic Gulf, next to Athens, is partly sheltered from it.

Choose Your Charter Type in Greece

Bareboat: you skipper the boat yourself and set your own course through the islands. You need a licence from your own country, or a certificate from a club or sailing school abroad (for example ICC, RYA Day Skipper or ASA 104), and a co-skipper.

Skippered: a professional skipper sails the boat, so no licence is needed. Good for families or groups who want local knowledge and a week without sailing duties.
